If My Life had a Soundtrack

I REALLY  wish my life had a soundtrack. Like, I want music to come on that I don’t have to pick but fits perfectly with whatever moment I am in. From the minute I wake up, I want to be surrounded by a melody and each song changes with the fluctuation of my surroundings and my mood. Music is like the sun. It can be loud and bright for all to see creating a sense of warmth, or it can seep through even the smallest crevice and fill the darkest places with light and beauty. Music reaches me in every situation. Is there something that reaches you in this way?

Music is my thing. Well one of them at least. It fills my heart and brings about this unexplainable joy. I have always been drawn to music and often times you will find me bouncing, dancing, and singing along to any tune that is around. Have you seen Guardians of the Galaxy Two? For those of you who haven’t, don’t worry, I am not about to ruin it. But at the beginning of the movie, Star-Lord and his band of misfits are trying to protect something from a bad guy (naturally); and while they are preparing for the battle, Baby Groot starts to mess with the radio. As the fighting commences, he plugs in all the correct wires and begins to bounce and tap his foot to the most joyful noise. Then the music takes over him, and he hardcore jams out and dances to the rhythm while completely oblivious to his surroundings. Do you have the mental picture yet? Well, it was brought to my attention by one of my beloved friends that this is TOTALLY me! And yall, I unapologetically own it. Now when I am with other people I try to keep a lid on it, and only sway to the beat or tap my foot. But Lord knows that when I am by myself I am belting it out like I have the voice of Whitney Houston, and dance moves of Beyonce. Yes, let’s all visualize that for a hot second.

I grew up with music constantly being a part of my life. When I was little we would take car rides to just about anywhere, and the radio was always blaring. Now although I was at the mercy of my parents’ musical taste, I like to think that things turned out ok. When I was riding shotgun with my dad, we would always rock out to Bob FM. The hits of the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and today. I lived and breathed Brick House, Rock You Like a Hurricane, and Hotel California while picking that air guitar like it was my job. When the whole family was in the car, mom was calling the shots and we would listen to Christian radio. Little did I know this would be the music that helped me feel most connected to the Lord and provide that feeling of raw worship.

As I got older and joined the dance team, we were always listening to the most up and coming songs. Everything played in that dance room floated between contemporary, folk, and hardcore rap. We danced to it all whether performing for crowds or having dance battles before class. My musical taste continued to grow as I entered college and found my love for country and “Today’s Hits” simultaneously. Each style of music was played when we were getting ready to go out to a specific location. Country for an evening that involved two-stepping or one of the countless country concerts that we would attend. Anything found of 96.7 when we were getting ready to have a dance party downtown, or even in our own living room.

You see for me music is more than a melody, it’s memories. Each song, each genre of music reminds me of something special and sends me straight back to that moment in an instant. It is the perfect mixture of meaningful words, musical tones, and beautiful memories that stir all of the parts of my heart and bring me so much joy. The perfect combination of a good melody and meaningful lyrics give me goosebumps. It’s those dang words getting to me again!

Oh, and what would my life soundtrack be you ask?  Well, if it was real life, this soundtrack would wake me up with some good worship tunes. Then I’d switch to Pandora and start my day with a little bit of Texas Country or Today’s Country depending on the mood of the morning. As the day progressed it would depend on my location. It could fluctuate between Today’s Hits or folk music depending on where I am in that moment. Then the grand finale of the day would depend on the emotional status at the end of the day. That’s one of the best things about music. The possibilities and the ways to be filled are endless.

For everyone, it’s something different. Maybe it’s beautiful sunrises or a new hiking spot. Maybe it’s specific locations that flood your mind with memories while being new and exciting all at the same time. Maybe it’s a movie that you deeply resonate with. We all are filled by different things. So what’s yours? What floods your mind with good memories from the past, while also keeping you present and excited about the future? What are you filled by? I sincerely want to hear your thoughts, so if you want to share, comment below!
